Can I buy a life insurance that only provides a death benefit if I die from covid-19 or coronavirus

Updated: May 20, 2021

The answer is yes. Without any medical exam or underwriting, Life Assurance Company of America offers a covid-19 life insurance policy with a $10,000 death benefit for $99. The covid-19 life insurance policy is issued on a one-year term basis.

All you have to do is be in generally good health and be able to represent the following:

I represent that I am over the age of 17 but under the age of 66; am not a resident of a nursing home or assisted living facility; am not a smoker; do not have and have never been treated for COVID-19, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cancer, or liver or kidney disease; and am not obese (i.e. BMI under 30).

In the unfortunate event that you die, if the death certificate lists covid-19 or coronavirus as a cause of death or contributing cause of death (i.e. primary, secondary, or tertiary cause), the death benefit is payable to your beneficiaries or estate.

We are not aware of any other life insurance company offering this novel coverage or micro-insurance product, i.e. coverage for death from the specific peril of covid-19/coronavirus. If anyone is aware of such a policy or approach to covid-19/coronavirus, we would love to hear from you or learn about it. Email us at admin@lifeassurancecoa.com.

However, before we provide more information about our covid-19 policy, we want to provide some information about the marketplace in general regarding covid-19/coronavirus because people are asking whether a traditional life insurance policy will cover death from covid-19/coronavirus.

It should not be surprising that people are more interested in buying life insurance now that we have been in a pandemic for over one year. The on-line literature suggests even younger consumers are planning to buy life insurance within the next year. (Study Finds COVID-19 Spurs Greater Interest in Life Insurance – Life Happens).

In addition, many consumers are asking whether their current life insurance policies or traditional life insurance policies will cover death caused by covid-19/coronavirus. The general consensus is that there are no specific exclusions for covid-19/coronavirus or pandemic in life insurance policies, which means there should be coverage, but the answer will depend on whether your application was complete and accurate and whether you paid your premiums timely. In addition, if you are currently applying and have tested positive, your application could be delayed or there could be additional underwriting. See these helpful articles for more information:

Basically, you need to be truthful with your life insurance company. Otherwise, a death claim could be denied or your life insurance policy could be rescinded, leaving your beneficiaries or estate with no death benefit. That said, if you want life insurance coverage that covers you specifically for death from covid-19/coronavirus, Life Assurance Company of America can assist.

Life Assurance Company of America does not need any of the following:

  • physical exam

  • blood test

  • urine test

  • medical information bureau (“MIB”)

  • prescription or RX history or script

  • attending physician statement (“APS”)

  • motor vehicle record (“MVR”)

We do require you to email us proof of identity, even if it is expired. This is so we can verify identity in the event of death. Obviously, the death certificate needs to match the name on the life insurance policy. Proof of identify can be sent after you purchase the covid-19 one-year term life insurance policy.

Acceptable proof of identity includes any of the following government issued documents: copy of a state issued driver’s license, foreign driver’s license, passport, foreign passport, visa, foreign birth certificate, state issued identification (“ID”) card, or any other acceptable form agreed to by Life Assurance Company of America that matches your full name.

What other information is needed? The application will take one minute and is all done on-line. We will need your first name, last name, email, phone number, date of birth, whether you are male or female, beneficiary information, and zip code (for Stripe, our payment processor), in addition to basic payment processing information.
